Seal 28

Seal 28

Seal 28

Seal 28 with lifting keel, which makes ‘Mission’ ideal for exploring estuaries.  Powered by a 22hp Sabb  22hp diesel engine. A centre cockpit sailing cruiser with three cabins and sleeps seven.  The aft cabin is totally separate from the rest of the boat and has two full length single berths.  Cabin windows, deck hatch, sprayhood and cockpit enclosure tent  (designed to allow for use under sail) have all been replaced.

There is very little history available on this Seal 28 so we do not know the date of rigging or sails but suspect that they will need replacing.  The only navigation equipment is a compass and radio, so a buyer would need to budget for the installation of navigation equipment.  We understand that the engine has been serviced but it has not been run for a couple of years and may need replacing.

‘The Seal 28 was designed by Angus Primrose  for John Baker in 1976, and 89 were built between then and  1981/82. The boats were built either with lifting keels or   fixed fin keels of nominally 4′ 3″ or 4′ 9″ draught.   The Seal 28 is quite a substantial cruising yacht and packs   a  lot of accommodation into a 28 foot hull.  John Baker advertised                     the Seal 28 as having seven berths, though the boat would  certainly be crowded with seven adults aboard, and the saloon  double is just 3 feet wide.’  yachts.net

Recently reduced in price as the owner has purchased another yacht. Equally at home channel cruising or exploring estuaries. Lying ashore close to our office at Noss Marina.

Swan 38

Swan 38

This Swan 38 was purchased 16 years ago as a step up from a Contessa 32.  She offered more accommodation and tankage but had the same sea- worthiness and performance.

She has been cruised on the south and west coast, around Ireland, west Scotland the Baltic and the North Sea and the Atlantic coast from Hamburg to La Rochelle.

‘Ellida’ will accommodate 9 racing crew so makes a very comfortable boat for 4 adults.

She has had numerous upgrades over the last 16 years and has been fitted out for sailing short handed.  Always wintered ashore and lovingly maintained.  Her teak decks have been replaced, the hull is epoxied and the topsides re painted with Awlgrip.  She had a full osmosis treatment in 1999/2000 when an additional GRP layer was added.

The engine was overhauled in 2014 and oil and filters have been changed every 50 hours.  Batteries were replaced in 2010.  The mast , spreaders and standing rigging were replaced in 2013 and six of the winches were replaced in 2008.

The interior has high quality teak joinery (re-varnished in 2008), cream vinyl head linings , teak and holly sole boards and green velour upholstery.  The forward cabin has a ‘V’berth, the saloon settees convert as well as pilot berths and two single berths in the aft cabin.

This Nicholson 35 was the Camper and Nicholson Earls Court boat show boat in 1983 and was commissioned in 1984.  She was built to an even higher standard than usual and has a slightly different layout to other models of the Nicholson 35.  The major difference is the location of the heads which are on the port side and self contained (not a walk through to the forepeak), at the insistence of the first owners wife, she was right to insist. This is a stunning boat with a duck egg blue hull and teak side decks and cockpit.

‘Drifter’ underwent a comprehensive major refit in 2003 which included  Volvo engine, electrics, wiring, batteries, instrumentation, standing rigging, running rigging, fully battened mainsail with stack pack, lazy jacks and other improvements.

Bickford Checkstone 28

Bickford Checkstone 28

We are very happy to say that after 40 years this Bickford Checkstone 28  is ready for launch.  The Checkstone  was, designed by Jim Bickford and was named after a ledge of rock that was visible from the front window of his house on the sea-front at Exmouth Devon.  Jim served his apprenticeship at Thorneycroft’s in Southampton, and started his own boat building business in Topsham on the river Exe in 1946, In 1967 after 21 years he sold his yard and started to work from his home as a Designer and Surveyor .  The days of mass produced Glass- fibre was still a long way off, and in those days if you wanted a boat it would be designed and “built to order” out of  wood .  Exmouth had several Boat Builders in and around the Harbour, Dixon’s, Holman’s, and  Lavis’s  to name a few  they were all building pleasure and work boats in wood.    Lavis’s Yard was founded in 1875 and had built nearly 200 boats by the time they started the Checkstone all had been built in the traditional ways with quality timber. The Checkstone is the last in an uninterrupted line going back  nearly 140 years.

Most boats in those days were one of a kind and took anything up to a year to complete, being wood it was common for the owner to ask for changes to be made as the work progressed this was to be the case with the Checkstone.  The first Checkstone was built by Lavis’s Yard in 1973 for Jim himself, it was to be  a family cruiser and stayed in the family for many years, even when working   for  Wessex Cruising  as a sail training boat, it stayed with the family as Wessex Cruising was owned by the Bickford family,  Dobbin is still sailing somewhere. The second was slightly longer ,32 feet, and made into a Centre- Cockpit version, both these were built to order.

Ron Lavis  frequently sailed on Dobbin and decided with Jim’s approval and help to build another as a Spec. Between them they improved on the original design, by doing away with the lifting keel so on this version they  added another half a ton to the cast iron keel this keel is 12 feet long and 16 inches at it’s widest point., this is how they managed to achieve the 3feet 9 inches shallow draft, ideal for cruising the many rivers and beaches but giving comfortable sailing in open seas.

Ron and his father started the build in 1974/5 and worked on her for several years in between commissions, over a two year period the hull, deck and superstructure were completed, and Ron stared to look for a buyer who would finance the completion, offering to personalise the boat to the owners specific requirements.Unfortunately for Ron  Glass Fibre  was rapidly becoming the  material of choice, wooden boats could no longer compete with the Mass production methods used with the new material, Wooden Boats were a thing of the past, Glass fibre boats were off the peg, lighter, faster and cheaper.

In 1993 20 years later the Checkstone was still in the workshop, work had been done on the cabin floors and walls, a toilet, cooker and bunks had been added .  It was in November 1993 that the  “Classic Boats Magazine” did an article on Dobbin and referred to this Checkstone in the following manner “ in the corner of a Boatbuilder’s  workshop in Exmouth lies a half-completed wooden boat waiting for a loving owner, it’s pedigree is impeccable and it’s workmanship unimpeachable”. Despite this article a buyer still did not materialise and when Ron retired some 14 years after the article it  was 34 years old and was still in the yard.

The yard was taken over by two local men, but they could not make a go of it,  it was forced to close within a few years,  the Checkstone was one of the few assets of the business  and was to be sold to pay off the Companies liabilities.  The Checkstone had been known to its current owner since 1974 when he had a small fishing boat built by Ron and visited the yard  and looked at the boat and decided it deserved to be preserved for posterity, it was after all the  last of an era.  The hull was purchased and delivered to the owners home where he  could oversee the work. Ron provided all his records, drawings specifications and he even had time sheets from the 30 odd years he had been working on the project.

The project to complete this Bickford Checkstone 28 has taken 5 years she is now all but  ready to launch, 40 years after the keel was first laid.

Vancouver 34 Pilot

This Vancouver 34 Pilot is an immensely strong and a real go anywhere yacht.  It has all the benefits of the classic Vancouver 34, but with the addition of the 360 degree views in the seated position and the ability to steer from the interior piloting position afforded by the raised pilothouse which also enables this yacht to benefit from vast amounts of additional accommodation space as a result.

‘Corrie Bay’ was built by Northshore Yachts in 1994 and has a spacious central linear galley, two separate double cabins, as well as space to fit an optional generator and water maker.  A large underfloor fridge/ freezer has already been fitted.  As with all Vancouvers the wet locker is adjacent to the companionway and there is a full sized chart table.

This Vancouver 34 Pilot is easily sailed single or shorthanded with her cutter rig and self tacking staysail. She also has a fully battened main and lazyjacks.  Most of the sail handling controls are led aft to the cockpit and the self tacking staysail makes sailing her that much easier.  The cockpit has three large lockers giving plenty of stowage space for the dinghy, fenders, warps and spare sails.  Corrie Bay has seen little use for her year and has approximately 900 engine hours.

She also has the added benefit of being fitted with Eberspacher hot air heating, LED lighting throughout most of the interior with red lights in the cabins.  Her navigation package includes autopilot, AIS receiver, Navtex, DSC VHF, GPS and course computer.

‘Scott Free’ is a well equipped Vancouver 32 built by Northshore Yachts, and is a fine example of these robust and reputable offshore cruisers.  The cutter rig is fitted with an Arun Genoa, fully battened mainsail and a cruising chute and snuffer, also comes with unused storm trysail and staysail.  Lazyjacks and a stack pack were fitted in 2013.

She is powered by a Yanmar 27 hp inboard diesel engine that was last serviced in 2014 and is sea water cooled.

This Vancouver 32 has a wind vane and other potential blue water equipment so would make an ideal choice for a couple or small family with ambitious plans.  She has the capacity to sleep six in one double and four singles and has Eberspacher heating throughout.  There are twin berths in the forecabin and the saloon seating converts to a double and single berth, there is also a quarter berth.

The traditional galley is ‘L’ shaped and is equipped with a gas cooker, fridge (which needs attention) and a sink.  Her chart table is forward facing on the starboard side and has a full range of navigation equipment including radar and a plotter.

Included in the sale is an Avon four person dinghy and 2.5HP Suzuki engine from 2013 which is ideal for ferrying ashore and exploring inland from the yacht.

She needs a little sprucing up at a cosmetic level, the vendor is very realistic about this and it is reflected in the price.  Available for viewing on the River Dart, a short boat trip away from our office at Noss Marina.

A huge inventory on this very well equipped vessel which has had just about every conceivable update made in recent years, and ready to sail away.  This Trident Warrior 40 is currently ashore for the winter in a nearby marina on the River Dart, a short car journey from our office.

Owners remarks:
Ocean Angel is in excellent condition.  She has done two Atlantic crossings and three Bay of Biscay crossings.  Her inventory is extremely comprehensive and the boat has been regularly upgraded.  The teak decks are of substantial thickness and have never been sanded.  She is available for further voyages at no cost to her new owner.  The log probably needs a  new impeller and the blue hull stripe could do with repainting.

There was one previous owner and I have owned the boat for 21 years and I am now looking for something smaller.
