This Westerly Griffon Club, ‘Salty’ was built in 1985 by Westerly Yachts to a design by Ed Dubois. The current owner has owned the yacht for 22 years and is now 91 so thinks he may have reached a time when he needs to retire from sailing. During his ownership he has cruised the south coast and channel islands and the boat has been stored ashore every winter.
She is powered by a Bukh 20hp diesel engine that was last serviced in August 2014 and all the batteries were replaced in 2013. She comes equipped with GPS, Autopilot and masthead aerial and windvane.
The headlining in the quarter berth needs replacing and her sails are all pre 2000. As far as we know neither the standing rigging or running rigging has been replaced.
The Westerly Griffon Cub is a well thought out 26 footer, the galley is compact and the chart table folds away when not in use. The ‘V’ berth in the forepeak gives a reasonable sized double berth with an infil and there is hanging space for wet sailing gear in the heads area. An ideal boat for sailing single handed or for a family.
The Griffon was the first design that Westerly commissioned from Ed Dubois, and was intended to replace the long-running and incredibly successful Centaur. Griffons were built from 1979 to 1989, with three models – Mk I, Mk II and Club variants. The Mk II had more wooden trim and interior lockers than the Mk I. This later Club version reverted to a simpler interior. Westerly’s were always moderately expensive yachts for their size, the price reflecting the build quality.
